Do Stories Need To Be Seen?

The Levvy Podcast welcomes Wes Foster back to ask "Do stories need to be seen?" The group explores film as the most integrated art form, the idea that images are inherently "open" (inviting return) where words are "closed," and Wes's critique of _The Chosen_'s drive toward accessibility against _The Passion of the Christ_'s deliberate withholding and mystery. The conversation widens into real cultural critique: the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a modern pantheon replacing Greek mythology, the Ark of the Covenant versus the Golden Calf as competing models of how to represent the divine, and the unlikely golden age of craftsmanship the Hayes Code produced. Near the close, a genuine, unresolved disagreement surfaces — Wes and Adam argue for modesty and restraint as a corrective to a hypersexualized culture, while Leroy pushes back with an experience of witnessing ballet, arguing that American prudishness itself reflects an unintegrated view of the body. The episode ends without resolving the question it opened with, by design. 00:42 The Art of Storytelling 02:43 The Value of Film as an Integrated Art Form 07:30 The Incarnational Nature of Film 11:52 The Impact of Film on Culture 17:59 Christian Film: Bridging the Gap 23:57 The Sacred and the Mundane in Storytelling 29:47 The Role of Beauty in Faith and Art 33:30 The Evolution of Film and Its Impact 39:58 The Tension Between Relatability and Transcendence 45:12 Confronting the Dark Side of Film 52:54 The Role of Mystery in Storytelling 59:00 Art as a Reflection of Yearning 01:03:03 The Sacred and the Mundane in Storytelling Mentions: _The Chosen_: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5622316 _The Passion of the Christ_: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0335345 The Hays Code: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hays_Code Josh Larsen, _Movies Are Prayers_: https://www.amazon.com/Movies-Are-Pra...
