Can Technology Save The World?

The Levvy Podcast welcomes Lis Green — a former ministry worker turned impact investor focused on tech-driven solutions for underserved communities — to ask "Can technology save the world?", echoing Season 1's "Can beauty save the world?" The group starts by defining technology itself, then traces a historical pattern: the telegraph, dynamite, and the airplane were all introduced with utopian promises that never fully materialized. Leroy reframes the Tower of Babel through this lens — scripture doesn't condemn the brick-making, only the motive behind it. Liz brings deep first-hand expertise, walking through Marshall McLuhan's theory that every technology we adopt requires giving something up elsewhere, the tension between scale and biblical proximity (the incarnation as "a ministry of presence"), and a concrete case study of a redemptive startup built for foster children failed by existing medical systems. The conversation turns sober addressing AI specifically — labor, security, and ecological risks, the geopolitical "race with China" narrative, and a call to slow down rather than accelerate blindly. Tune in to hear the episode’s most provocative claim about technology and God’s power. 00:21 Introducing Lis Green 03:20 Introduction to the Levy Podcast and Guest 07:05 Tools vs. Technology 10:58 Historical Optimism in Technology 15:46 The Neutrality of Tools and Tech 21:37 The Need for Discernment in Technology 28:32 Balancing Breadth and Depth in Technology Use 30:42 The Impact of Technology on Society 34:38 Motivation Behind Technology Use 36:52 Consumption vs. Creation of Technology 41:39 Redemptive Technology in Action 49:16 Ethics of AI and Robotics 59:01 The Human Cost of Technological Advancement Mentions: Jevon’s Paradox: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jevons_...
