Happy Independence Day (#Jamaica64, #jamaicaindependance and #emancipationday) 🇯🇲 In honor of Independence, our family of 5 took a meaningful road trip through the heart of the island to visit my mother’s ancestral family land in Clarendon. This is the sacred ground where my mother was born and raised by her father, and where our children got to connect with their roots and family history. After previously showing you my father’s side of the family land, we are so honored to take you on a tour of my mother's yard. We walk through the historic original family house where my mum grew up, visit the resting places of my grandfather and beloved relatives buried on the land, and share the deep history of our family lineage. Standing under the massive, ancient Ackee and Coconut trees—which generations before us have harvested from—created a spiritual connection to the land that we will never forget. Along the way, we grabbed classic road snacks at Better Taste Bakery ($280 JMD for 5 pack of Bulla!), stopped at the historic Clarendon Bridge to ask locals for directions, and reunited with my mother's childhood friend (my Aunty) and others who knew my mother!
