Tucked away within the Datong campus of Shanxi University lies an exquisite complex of historic buildings dating back to the Republic of China era—the former site of the Shanxi Provincial No. 3 Middle School. Situated just over five kilometers west of Datong city, the complex was completed in 1921 at a cost of 80,000 silver dollars; more than a century has since passed. As time has unfolded, this former school has been incorporated into Shanxi University. During the summer break, the campus opens to the public, inviting visitors to quietly explore its past. The architectural complex remains remarkably well-preserved. Passing through the old school gate—supported by eight upright pillars—one is greeted by a geometrically symmetrical garden, beyond which stretches a long administrative building. At the heart of the campus stands a towering auditorium, the most magnificent structure in the complex. Behind the auditorium, twelve classrooms are arranged in pairs, enclosing a tranquil courtyard. Despite a century of weathering, the buildings remain sturdy and elegant, continuing to serve their purpose today. The stone steps leading to the classrooms are solid and enduring, silently bearing the weight of time. A quiet serenity pervades the spacious campus; the occasional visitor walks softly by, their footsteps echoing on the grey brick—sounds that seem to carry the faint, lingering resonance of students reading aloud a century ago.
