Jiang'an County is renowned as the "First County on the Ten-Thousand-Li Yangtze River," being the first county the river reaches after flowing past Yibin. The mighty Yangtze winds its way through the area for 38 kilometers, nourishing a land rich in cultural heritage. With a history spanning 1,500 years, the county is home to a wealth of historical and cultural legacies; its network of old streets and ancient alleys silently recounts stories from a thousand years of history. On this visit to Jiang'an, the most poignant realization was that the long-awaited renovation of Guihua Lane and Guixiang Lane had already begun. The once-charming, secluded narrow alleys and their elegant, distinctive old gatehouses were entirely obscured by cold construction hoardings. Residents had all relocated, and many century-old houses had been razed to the ground. Amidst the process of urban renewal, the ancient memories unique to the old town are quietly being supplanted by brand-new, faux-antique structures. In contrast, Baima Street and Eluobao Street—located on the northern side of the lanes—retain the authentic character of the old town. Though the streets may appear somewhat weathered, they teem with vitality and the rich, bustling atmosphere of everyday life. The calls of vendors and the playful shouts of children rise and fall, while wisps of cooking smoke drift through the air. Generations of residents have lived and thrived here, sustaining a vibrant, unbroken tradition of local life; this, to me, is the most moving image of Jiang'an.
Like all small towns along the river, the riverside in Jiang'an comes alive on summer evenings with a steady stream of locals seeking relief from the heat and playing in the water—a vivid scene that has endured for a thousand years. While urban renewal is an inevitable part of development, the precious architectural heritage and the authentic, bustling spirit of the old town represent the city's unique roots—qualities well worth our dedicated protection and deepest appreciation.
