They are longer than the Himalayas, longer than the Rockies, and only the underwater mid-ocean ridge system is longer overall. The Andes pass through seven countries, contain over 50 active volcanoes, and form the geological spine of an entire continent. But the Andes are fundamentally different from the Himalayas. The Himalayas formed by continent-continent collision (India crashing into Asia). The Andes are built by subduction — the Nazca Plate (oceanic crust born at the East Pacific Rise) is plunging beneath the South American Plate at 7-8 cm per year. As the dense oceanic crust dives into the mantle, water released from the slab triggers melting in the overlying mantle wedge. This melt rises through the continental crust, erupting as the Andean volcanic arc. Compression at the boundary thickens the crust and pushes up the mountain range. 🌋 A MOUNTAIN RANGE BUILT BY FIRE The Andes are studded with active volcanoes — Cotopaxi, Villarrica, Nevado del Ruiz, Ojos del Salado. The arc is divided into four distinct volcanic zones, each reflecting different subduction geometry. This is the textbook example of "Andean-type" subduction — so iconic that geologists named the entire class of subduction zones after it. 💰 THE WORLD'S COPPER VAULT The Andes contain the world's richest porphyry copper deposits. Chuquicamata, Escondida, Collahuasi, El Teniente — these names dominate global copper supply. Chile alone produces nearly 30% of the world's copper. Porphyry copper deposits form in shallow magma chambers above subduction zones — hydrothermal fluids concentrate copper, molybdenum, gold, and silver into mineable orebodies. Without the Andes, the global electronics industry, electrical grid, and energy transition would be impossible. 🏜️ THE DRIEST DESERT ON EARTH On the western side of the Andes sits the Atacama Desert — the driest non-polar place on Earth, where some regions have not had measurable rain in centuries. The Andes block Atlantic moisture from reaching the Pacific coast, and the cold Humboldt Current suppresses evaporation. NASA uses the Atacama as a Mars analogue site.
