Roughly 600 million years ago, three continents we know today —
South America, Africa, and Antarctica — slammed together to form
West Gondwana, one of the largest landmasses ever to exist on Earth.
This is the geological road trip across deep time: how ancient oceans
closed, mountain belts rose along continental margins, and a
supercontinent was stitched together piece by piece. The evidence
is still written in the rocks of Brazil, West Africa, and the frozen
edge of Antarctica.

West Gondwana was the western half of the larger Gondwana
supercontinent — itself part of the even older Pannotia and Rodinia.
Its assembly during the late Neoproterozoic involved the Brasiliano
and Pan-African orogenies, vast mountain-building events that fused
ancient cratons along thousands of kilometers of continental margin.
The matching geology along the Atlantic coasts of South America
and Africa is one of the strongest pieces of evidence for plate
tectonics — the same evidence Alfred Wegener pointed to a century
ago when he proposed continental drift.
Today, those once-joined margins are split by the Atlantic Ocean,
but the rocks remember. Identical rock formations, fossil belts,
and ancient mountain roots line up across continents like torn
pages of the same book.
