📖 *What if understanding HOW God’s message was written is just as important as understanding WHAT the message says?*
Today we continue our quarterly Bible study series, *The Gift of Prophecy**, with the lesson **“Literary Genres and Styles.”*
Our focus is *Isaiah 13:1**, where Isaiah introduces a prophetic message often described as an **oracle* or **burden**.
The Bible is not written in only one literary style.
Throughout Scripture, God inspired His messengers to communicate through different forms—including historical records, poetry, prophecy, visions, symbolic language, personal accounts, and apocalyptic imagery.
That matters because *different types of writing are meant to communicate truth in different ways.*
When we read poetry, we may encounter imagery, repetition, and parallel ideas.
When we read historical narrative, we are following events and actions.
When we read apocalyptic prophecy, we may encounter symbols, heavenly beings, dramatic visions, and cosmic events.
And when the prophets delivered an **oracle**, they were communicating a message or revelation that came from God.
📖 *Isaiah 13:1* introduces one of these prophetic messages.
Understanding literary genre does not weaken the authority of Scripture—it helps us understand Scripture more accurately.
If we treat every symbol as literal, every poem as straightforward prose, or every prophetic image exactly the same way, we can easily misunderstand what the inspired writer was communicating.
God worked through real people with different personalities, backgrounds, vocabularies, and writing styles, yet He used those differences to communicate His truth.
That gives us an important principle for Bible study:
*Before asking, “What does this verse mean to me?” we should first ask, “What was the inspired writer actually communicating?”*
When we understand the style, context, language, and purpose of a passage, we become better equipped to understand the message God preserved for us.
As we continue studying **The Gift of Prophecy**, we are learning not only that God spoke through His prophets—but also the many ways He chose to communicate His message.
🔥 *Here is today’s question:*
*Are we allowing Scripture to speak in the way God inspired it to be written—or are we sometimes forcing our own interpretation onto the text before understanding its context and literary style?*
