How did humans invent music?
Long before written songs, concert halls, or modern instruments, humans were already making sounds. But when did those sounds become music—and what can archaeology actually tell us about the beginning of it all?
In this documentary, we travel into humanity’s distant past to investigate ancient musical instruments, the remarkable bone flutes of Jiahu, and the controversial Divje Babe bone often discussed in debates about Neanderthal music.
We’ll separate archaeological evidence from scientific interpretation, explore what ancient instruments can—and cannot—tell us, and examine possible reasons music became such an important part of human life.
One question remains at the heart of the story: can we ever identify the first song, or did music begin long before the evidence that survived?
This is a journey through prehistoric archaeology, the origins of music, ancient instruments, human creativity, and the limits of what we can know about the distant past.
*A note on historical reconstructions:* Any illustrative scenes or recreated sounds are modern interpretations designed to help explain the evidence. They are not recordings or direct documentation of prehistoric life.
