*“You spoke the whole — we answered part.”* You Spoke All — We Answered Part is a Christian hymn inspired by Thomas Manton’s exposition of Psalm 119:6: “Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all thy commandments.” Manton warns against a divided obedience. Some are careful to deal honestly and kindly with other people, yet give little thought to what they owe to God: faith, fear, love, worship, and obedience. Others are diligent in worship and religious duties, yet become harsh, dishonest, unmerciful, or careless in their treatment of their neighbour. But the same God commands both. We cannot claim to love God while willingly despising His commands concerning our neighbour. Neither can we say that treating people well is enough while withholding from our Creator the worship and love that belong to Him. Manton gives a striking picture: God speaks the whole Word, but like a broken echo, we often return only the part we prefer. That thought became the heart of this song: **Teach us to hear All You have said; To love You, Lord, And love our neighbour as ourselves.** **No chosen truth, No favoured part; Write all Your Word Upon our heart.** **For You spoke all— You spoke all— O teach us to answer all.** This is not a claim that Christians obey perfectly. Our righteousness and acceptance before God are found in Jesus Christ alone.
