By August, Washington had spent more than a trillion dollars on interest, with a month of its budget year still to go. That was more than it spent on national defense, more than its net spending on Medicare, and the equivalent of 21 cents of every dollar it collected. None of it paid back a single dollar of what America owes.
And the bill was that big while a lot of America's debt was still on cheap old rates. Those loans have expiration dates. About $10.8 trillion was due within twelve months, roughly a third of everything the government sells to investors, and the replacements cost more at today's prices. Nobody can stop the dates, and the bill does not need another rate hike to keep growing.

Every number is real, as of 5 October 2026. US interest, spending and receipts are eleven-month figures, October 2025 to August 2026, from the Treasury's monthly statement. The refinancing cost is our own calculation from the Treasury's list of loans and their repayment dates, at the market yields of 5 October; it is an illustration, not a forecast.
