On October 9, with diesel at $6.20 a gallon, President Trump announced a deal for Russian diesel, reached, according to reports, on a phone call with Vladimir Putin. In the latest weekly count American refineries made 5.29 million barrels of diesel a day, the country burned 3.65 million, and one barrel in every three was sold abroad. The whole Russian promise, about 4.8 million tons, equals about 20 days of America's own diesel exports. The first shipment equals about 30 hours. Our read of the numbers: American diesel goes to whoever bids the most for it, this year that has been a buyer abroad, and the Russian deal changes neither the price nor who gets the barrel. In this video: • What a $6.20 gallon adds to a 2,000-mile haul and to a 30-gallon fill • Why America is not short of diesel: what it makes, what it burns, what it exports • Where the price came from, and the highest reading since 1994 • Exports hit a record in August while American storage tanks ran down 13.5% • Who decides where a barrel goes, and why the pump price climbs to match the foreign bid • What Marathon Petroleum and Valero earned in the second quarter • The diesel export ban the White House floated on September 28, and who lined up against it • The Russian deal measured against America's own exports • The Treasury license that allows it, and what it leaves blank • Why Russia may not have the diesel to send • The 2022 law that bans Russian fuel imports • The best case against an export ban • 25 days to the midterms • Four things to watch that will show whether the deal mattered Every number is real, as of 11 October 2026. Price, production, use, export and inventory figures are from the Energy Information Administration's weekly release of 7 October 2026 and count diesel and heating oil together as distillate. The deal's volumes, the call, the export ban discussions, Russia's export figures and the survey are as reported in the press. "Asked" in the title is this channel's word: the reports say only that a call was followed by a deal, and no report says who proposed it. The reading of why the deal was chosen is this channel's conclusion.
