How Does "I'm Not a Robot" Actually Work?

Why do websites make you click "I'm not a robot"? And what is that little box actually checking? That checkbox has a strange history. It began as a puzzle only humans could solve, quietly turned millions of people into helpers digitizing old books, then lost a long race against the computers it was built to stop. Today, much of the checking happens around your click, not in it. This DAXO case file follows CAPTCHA from a 1990s search-engine problem to the reCAPTCHA checkbox and the newest systems that ask a device to vouch for you. You'll see how the distorted words worked, why the puzzles kept getting solved, and who gets wrongly flagged as a bot along the way. The answer to what the box really proves is not what most people think. The pixel-art scenes are our own simplified illustrations, not the real widgets, and every number on screen names its source.
