Are those perfect wedding photographs on Pinterest actually from real weddings? And what happens when the photographer has just one chance to capture a moment that will never happen again?
In this episode of What's in the Title?, I sit down with Iwona Protasewicz, a wedding and lifestyle photographer whose beautiful photographs I've experienced from the other side of the camera!
We all know the romantic version of wedding photography. Beautiful couples, golden sunsets, champagne, flowers and unforgettable moments. But what does the job really look like when you're the person responsible for capturing it all?
Iwona takes us through an actual wedding day, from arriving early to find the best light to navigating a tight schedule, calming nervous couples and making sure those once-in-a-lifetime moments aren't missed.
And sometimes, things happen very quickly. Like the moment Iwona had to change her camera settings in seconds when the sun suddenly appeared just as a bride was walking into her ceremony.
Then there's the work nobody sees.
A single wedding can produce around 5,000 photographs. Imagine having to choose which ones deserve to stay! We explore the painstaking process of selecting and editing images, the costs of running a photography business, the unpredictability of seasonal income, and why photographers spend far more time working than their wedding-day presence suggests.
Iwona also shares what it's like to build a creative business where being a talented photographer is only part of the job. You also need to market yourself, manage clients, plan ahead and develop a style that people recognize.
But the conversation takes an especially interesting turn when we discuss Instagram and Pinterest.
Where do those flawless wedding photographs come from? What's the difference between a real wedding and a carefully arranged styled shoot? And how might the images we admire online change our expectations of our own special moments?
As someone who has planned a wedding and experienced a photoshoot with Iwona, I had a few realizations of my own!
We also talk about starting a career in photography, the personality and skills needed to succeed, and whether AI can really make the photographer's job easier.
And underneath all the practical details is something I particularly love about Iwona's approach: the importance of making people feel comfortable enough to be themselves.
Because years later, when you look at a photograph, it's often the feeling behind that moment that matters most.
Whether you're planning a wedding, curious about photography, considering a creative career, or simply wondering what goes on behind those beautiful images, I think you'll discover plenty of surprises in this conversation.
