Five years later, they found him cut apart in oil drums in a New Jersey warehouse. This is the complete story of the Galante assassination, the Pizza Connection, and the most dangerous man in the Sicilian Mafia's American operation. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ On July 12, 1979, Bonanno crime family boss Carmine Galante was shot dead on the patio of Joe and Mary's Restaurant in Bushwick, Brooklyn. His two Sicilian bodyguards, Cesare Bonventre and Baldassare Amato, stood down and let it happen. They had been offered a deal: step aside, receive promotion, take a larger cut of the family's heroin operation. Bonventre collected. At 28, he became the youngest captain in Bonanno family history. Alongside Salvatore Catalano, he commanded the Sicilian Zip faction and became a central figure in the Pizza Connection — a heroin trafficking network that moved an estimated $1.65 billion in product from Sicilian refineries through pizza restaurant fronts across New York, New Jersey, and the Midwest between 1975 and 1984. He survived the Bonanno family's brutal internal war. He switched sides at the critical moment, delivering the Zip soldiers to Joe Massino's faction and sealing the fate of three rival captains killed at the 20/20 Night Club on May 5, 1981. He made himself indispensable. Joe Massino still had him killed. Salvatore Vitale drove. Louis Attanasio shot Bonventre twice in the head. Bonventre grabbed the steering wheel and fought back — two bullets in his skull — then crawled across the garage floor before two more shots finished it. His body was dismembered, packed into 55-gallon industrial drums, and moved to a warehouse in Garfield, New Jersey. Seven days later, a federal grand jury indicted him on Pizza Connection charges. They had no idea he was already dead. The Pizza Connection trial ran for 17 months — the longest criminal jury trial in U.S. history at the time. 18 convictions. Gaetano Badalamenti received 45 years. Salvatore Catalano received 25 years. In 2006, Louis Attanasio was convicted of the murder and sentenced to 15 years. Cesare Bonventre was 33 years old. His wife was pregnant when he died. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 🔔 Subscribe for deep-dive organized crime and history every week. 📌 Watch next: → Vincent "Chin" Gigante: The Bathrobe Defense → The Pizza Connection: Full Story → Joe Massino: The Last Don Who Broke Omertà ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ #CesareBonventre #BonannoCrimeFamily #PizzaConnection #CarmineGalante #AmericanMafia #OrganizedCrime #TrueCrime #MafiaHistory #SicilianMafia #NewYorkMafia #GalanteAssassination #JoeMassino #CosaNostra #MafiaDocumentary #GangsterHistory
