This is the full untold story of DiB — the most powerful earner in Gambino crime family history, the man who secretly controlled the American pornography industry and New York's construction unions, and the murder that was never fully explained. Robert "DiB" DiBernardo was unlike any other member of the Gambino crime family. He had no crew. He had no soldiers. He reported directly to the boss — first to Paul Castellano, then to John Gotti — and he generated more money than almost anyone in the organization. He built Star Distributors into one of the largest adult entertainment distribution operations in the United States. He controlled Teamsters Local 282, the union that decided who poured concrete on every major construction project in New York City. He was one of the first members of the Gambino family to support the plot to kill Castellano, helping Gotti rise to power. Gotti rewarded him with a formal captaincy. Six months later, Gotti ordered him killed. The hit was carried out by Sammy "The Bull" Gravano — who strongly objected to the order — in the basement of Gravano's drywall company on Stillwell Avenue in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. The man who delivered the murder order to Gotti was Angelo "Quack Quack" Ruggiero, the only Gambino member permitted to visit Gotti in jail. Ruggiero owed DiBernardo approximately $250,000. He was never charged. He died of lung cancer in 1989. The body of Robert DiBernardo was never found. Years later, FBI listening devices planted in an apartment above the Ravenite Social Club captured John Gotti admitting on tape that DiBernardo had never actually said anything subversive to anyone Gotti could verify — that he had simply taken one man's word and acted on it. That tape helped put Gotti away for life. This video covers the full arc: DiBernardo's origins on Long Island, his early career with the DeCavalcante crime family, his entry into the Gambino organization through Gambino capo Ettore Zappi, the construction of his pornography empire through Star Distributors and Show World on 42nd Street, his unexpected role in the 1984 presidential campaign when his business address was connected to Geraldine Ferraro's husband, his place in the conspiracy against Paul Castellano, and the events of June 5, 1986 — the last day anyone heard from him. Narrated in the style of deep-dive organized crime history. No fluff. No filler.
