This was one of those dives I’ll remember for a long time. I joined Jason McCarthy and Alex Dulavitz of East Coast Divers for a scallop dive off Rockport, Massachusetts — riding DPVs offshore from Old Garden Beach and spending the dive hunting Atlantic sea scallops in about 60–65 feet of water. But this video is about more than scallops. Jason and Alex are both incredibly accomplished divers, and I can’t thank them enough for inviting me along and making me feel like part of the team. From one of the most thorough pre-dive planning conversations I’ve ever had — covering gas planning, MODs, DPV failures, cutting devices, contingencies and team procedures — to watching these guys operate underwater, there was a lot for me to learn on this dive. Jason in particular is an incredibly dialed diver. His trim, buoyancy, awareness and efficiency underwater are something I found myself watching throughout the dive. Alex was Jason’s instructor, and getting the opportunity to dive alongside both of them was an experience I’m extremely grateful for. For this dive I chose EAN40, giving me a gas optimized for the roughly 65-foot working depth while reducing nitrogen loading and extending my available no-decompression time compared with air. Combined with carrying additional gas, the goal was to give ourselves plenty of usable bottom time while maintaining gas reserves and contingency options without intentionally entering decompression. And then, of course, there were the scallops. After an incredible dive, Jason graciously gifted me with his entire catch, roughly TWO POUNDS of freshly shucked Atlantic sea scallops. It doesn’t get much better than bringing dinner home on a SUEX! ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🔥 SUPPORT EAST COAST DIVERS 🔥 Earlier this year, a devastating fire heavily damaged East Coast Divers’ longtime shop in Brookline, Massachusetts. They are continuing to teach, service equipment, run trips and support the New England diving community while they rebuild. If you’re able to help, please consider supporting their rebuilding efforts: 🌊 East Coast Divers: https://ecdivers.com/ 🔥 East Coast Divers Rebuild GoFundMe: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-rebui... Even if you can’t donate, consider supporting ECD through classes, trips, equipment purchases and services as they work through the rebuilding process. This video is dedicated to the team at East Coast Divers and the community surrounding them. Thank you Jason and Alex for bringing me along, sharing your experience, and giving me one hell of a dive. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🤿 THE DIVE 📍 Rockport, Massachusetts 🌊 Atlantic Ocean 📏 Maximum Depth: ~65 ft ⏱️ Runtime: ~1 hour 💨 Gas: EAN40 🛵 DPV: SUEX VR Nemo 🎯 Mission: Atlantic Sea Scallops 🍽️ Result: ~2 lbs shucked scallop meat A huge thank you again to Jason McCarthy, Alex Dulavitz and everyone at East Coast Divers. Until next time, I’ll see you underwater. #ScubaDiving #ScallopDiving #EastCoastDivers #NewEnglandDiving #SUEX #DPV #RockportMA #Nitrox #DescentDisciples
