Murdered by Teenage Killers - The Story of Shanda Sharer

On a cold night in January 1992, twelve-year-old Shanda Sharer answered a knock at the door — and never came home. This is the story of the months of warnings that came first, and of the people who could have stopped it. In the autumn of 1991, Shanda was a bright, athletic seventh-grader in southern Indiana, caught in the middle of a jealous rivalry she barely understood. Over the following months the threats were made in the open — at a school dance, in the hallways, in letters handed to a youth prosecutor. Teachers knew. Classmates knew. Her parents moved her to a new school. None of it kept her safe. This documentary follows the full shape of the case: who Shanda was, how an ordinary teenage obsession escalated month after month, the night of 10 January 1992, the discovery on a rural road near Madison the next morning, and the investigation that revealed the people responsible were four teenage girls from the local community. In keeping with this channel's approach, the film stays on Shanda — and on the several moments this could have been stopped. It contains no graphic imagery and no gratuitous detail. The case is disturbing enough told plainly. The case is closed. All four were charged as adults and pleaded guilty. The two identified as the principals were each sentenced to sixty years; the other two received shorter sentences under plea agreements after coming forward.
