Hey guys! We're now on Spotify 🎧 Join us here: https://open.spotify.com/show/7gCS2wc... Drift off tonight inside a tall new stucco house in Kensington on Tuesday 21 February 1865, in a cold late winter, three years into Queen Victoria's widowhood. Mrs Beeton's book says a lady's maid earned £12 to £25 a year, while the rent of a house on Onslow Square ran £110 to £130. Beneath the evening dress sit a cage crinoline of 9 to 18 steel hoops and stays with a split steel busk, and the nightgown waiting by the fire fastens with 14 glass buttons. So who undressed a wealthy Victorian woman for bed, did anyone really brush her hair 100 strokes, and who was the last person awake in the house? Subscribe to the channel: @thequietpasst In this video, we talk about one night of a wealthy Victorian woman in a Kensington townhouse in 1865, including the ladies leaving the dinner table, the new stucco houses of South Kensington, calls and cards and the law of coverture, Mrs Beeton's death that February, the housemaid turning down the beds at teatime, the lady's maid in the housekeeper's room, bedroom candles on the stair, the dressing room and Robert Kerr's bedchamber suite, the evening bodice and its hooks, the skirt and its train, the cage crinoline, the 1864 corset, slippers with no left or right, washing at the washstand, the 14-button nightgown, the hairpins and frizettes, the brush and the legend of the hundred strokes, Macassar oil and the price ladder, the nightcap, the bed in graceful folds, the warming pan and the stone bottle, separate rooms, Florence Nightingale's open window, laudanum and the night light, the lady's maid's last duties and her attic room, and the house asleep before the first fire. 🔔 Subscribe so the next long night in England's past is waiting for you whenever sleep is slow to come. 💬 Tell me where you are listening from, and which you would have liked best: the brush by the dressing-room fire, or the warmed bed with a stone bottle at your feet. 📢 Share this with someone who loves Victorian England, period dramas or a gentle story at bedtime, on Facebook, Reddit or in your group chats. You are the reason these quiet nights keep getting made.
