Hey guys! We're now on Spotify 🎧 Join us here: https://open.spotify.com/show/7gCS2wc... Fall asleep tonight in an Edwardian country house in Hampshire, on the Saturday night of a winter house party in 1907. The house already has electric light, yet at dusk the footman sets out 18 flat silver candlesticks on the hall table, one for every guest. The dressing gong sounds half an hour before dinner, the host takes in the lady of highest rank, and while the house dines the housemaids carry a can of hot water to every bedroom and dressing room. Below stairs, a hall boy works a 16-hour day, and beyond the park gates a farm laborer earns 17s 6d a week. And when the gentlemen finally leave the smoking room, the butler lights the last candle and begins his round of every door. Subscribe to the channel: @thequietpasst In this video, we talk about the strange sleep rules of an Edwardian country house, including the bedroom candlesticks on the hall table, the name cards on the bedroom doors, the fire that belonged to the housemaid, the visiting valets and lady's maids, the dressing gong, going in to dinner by rank, the housemaids' evening round, the procession of the upper servants, the tips left under the pillow, the lamp room's rule of sand never water, bridge and the hostess's bow, the smoking room's couple of hours, the lady's maid who sat up, the dressing room between husband and wife, the footmen's card game in the pantry, the butler's locking-up round, the under butler who slept across the plate room door, the night watchman's clock, and the attics where the house's shortest night was slept. 🔔 Subscribe so the next long night in England's past is waiting for you when sleep won't come. 💬 Tell me where you are listening from, and which rule of that Edwardian house you would have found hardest to keep. 📢 Share this with a friend who loves country houses, below stairs life or a slow story at bedtime, on Facebook, Reddit or in your group chats.
