On September 20, 2018, a contractor went back to a property outside Renton, Washington to pick up tools he had left behind. The owner's car was gone. He found Steven Morphis in a shed, tied and wrapped in a tarp. Behind the house there was a freshly dug hole. Morphis was 67. He had just retired from Boeing after a long career and lived alone on seven acres. He had never met the man who killed him. That man had spent weeks looking for a house exactly like this one — one owner, not visible from the road, mortgage paid off — and then knocked on the door. Four days later his wife sat down with detectives in Tacoma. She told them she had been to that property once, for a roofing estimate. This is the full breakdown of that interview. As one of the detectives puts it: every twenty minutes, they get one new detail she had not told them before New interrogation breakdowns every week.
