The Sukhoi Su-24 Fencer doesn't look like much but it revolutionized Soviet tactical aviation by doing something no Soviet jet had ever done before—fly through any weather, hug terrain at 600 knots, and deliver bombs with precision when pilots couldn't see beyond a few hundred meters. With its distinctive swing wings, terrain-following radar that could navigate just 60 meters above ground, and side-by-side cockpit design, this angular beast gave the USSR its first true all-weather strike capability against NATO targets. Over 1,400 were built and despite being a maintenance nightmare with thirsty engines and complex systems, the Su-24 still flies combat missions today because it gets the job done when nothing else is available. This is the story of how Soviet engineers created sophistication from scratch and why this unglamorous jet remains relevant decades after its first flight.
