Sheikh Dr. Abdulbasit Congratulates Adabiyyah on 100 Years — Sheikh Kamaluddin & Sheikh Adam Al-Ilory
In this video, Sheikh Dr. Abdulbasit Mashhood Jubril Al-Ketuwi congratulates the Adabiyyah community, particularly Zumratul Adabiyyah Al-Kamaliyyah, on the centenary anniversary of its Arabic and Islamic educational institution. He describes this milestone as a testament to the vision, dedication, and lasting legacy of Sheikh Kamaluddin Al-Adabiyyah.
Sheikh Dr. Abdulbasit explains that he could not attend the centenary celebration because of prior family and social commitments, including wedding ceremonies he needed to attend. However, his father, Sheikh Mashhood Jubril Al-Ketuwi, was invited and attended the occasion.
Does Success Depend Only on Writing Books?
The Sheikh discusses a statement attributed to Dr. Widad Naibi during the centenary celebration. She reportedly reflected on how people had sometimes asked whether she had written any books, making her feel as though her achievements were being questioned. However, as she began writing, she came to consider another measure of success: how many books could she write that would produce as many students and scholars as an established educational institution had nurtured?
Sheikh Dr. Abdulbasit clarifies that, in his view, the point is not to diminish authorship or scholarship through writing, but to recognize that a scholar's legacy can also be measured by the students he trains and the generations of scholars he produces.
He invokes the example of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, whose enduring legacy includes the people he taught and nurtured, and applies this lesson to Sheikh Kamaluddin and the many students who have emerged from his educational institution.
Sheikh Adam Al-Ilory, Sheikh Kamaluddin & Their Legacies
Sheikh Dr. Abdulbasit also acknowledges Sheikh Adam Abdullahi Al-Ilory as a respected author and educator whose students have become scholars in their own right. He recalls his connection with Dr. Widad Naibi's family and explains that when her father, Sheikh Abdullahi Naibi, approached him about the University of Ibn Battuta in the Republic of Benin, he recommended the institution to some students seeking further Arabic and Islamic education.
He uses this recollection to explain why he believes the statement attributed to Dr. Widad should not be interpreted as an attack on Sheikh Adam or his legacy.
A Call for Adab and Mutual Respect
Sheikh Dr. Abdulbasit urges both the Markaziyyah and Adabiyyah communities to learn from one another rather than engage in rivalry or disparagement. He recalls that Adabiyyah was once mocked by some people who questioned whether its scholars could compete academically with Markaziyyah. He argues that the achievements of Adabiyyah scholars today should put such attitudes to rest.
He further explains that just as followers of Sheikh Adam naturally honour and praise their own teacher, followers of Sheikh Kamaluddin are equally entitled to honour theirs. Neither community should use loyalty to its teacher as a reason to insult or belittle the other.
Two Great Scholars, One Shared Heritage
The Sheikh concludes by celebrating both Sheikh Adam Abdullahi Al-Ilory and Sheikh Kamaluddin as outstanding scholars whose educational legacies have benefited generations. He highlights their shared roots in Kwara State and reflects on how their contributions have shaped Arabic and Islamic education, particularly in Lagos.
His message is clear: the achievements of these two great scholars should be a source of pride and unity, not division. Their students should preserve their teachers' legacies through knowledge, good character, mutual respect, and continued service to Islam.
Beyond the congratulatory poem he composed for the centenary, Sheikh Dr. Abdulbasit's message is a reminder that true scholarship is reflected not only in books written, but also in lives taught, scholars nurtured, and communities united.
Congratulations to the Adabiyyah community on its 100-year milestone.
