Upstairs on Hollywood Boulevard, in 1923, you've got a table at the Cafe Montmartre. The orchestra is playing through lunch.
These are the foods the first movie stars really ate, in the nightclubs, on the diets, and in their own kitchens.
In this video:
✓ The first nightclub on Hollywood Boulevard and its surprising menu
✓ What silent stars ate to stay slim for the camera
✓ Recipes the stars sent to the 1929 Photoplay cookbook
✓ Chaplin's favorite plates around town
✓ The cold welcome at Musso and Frank
✓ Valentino's own kitchen
✓ A forgotten dessert with a star's name on it
A rich man's room, and a poor kid's supper on the plates. That's what the first Hollywood really looked like when you pulled up a chair. The stars had gold name plates and bootleggers and orchestras at lunch, and still, when the menu came, they ordered borscht, lentils, mince pie, spaghetti.
Which of these would have looked right at home on your own family's table? Tell us in the comments which one you grew up with, and where.
The pie in the oven for three hours is still a pretty good idea.
