The City That Drove an Emperor Mad | Dara Ancient City, Mardin

Dara Ancient City (Anastasiopolis) near Mardin, southeastern Turkey, was Rome's last fortress against Persia, and home to giant underground cisterns and a haunting rock-cut necropolis. In 573, a messenger reached Constantinople with terrible news: the fortress of Dara had fallen to Persia. According to the chroniclers, Emperor Justin II lost his mind when he heard it, and never recovered. Dara was built between 505 and 507 by Emperor Anastasius as Rome's frontier fortress against the Sasanian Empire, just a few hours from Persian-held Nisibis. It had nearly four kilometers of walls, giant rock-cut cisterns up to fifteen meters high, and one of the earliest known arch dams in history. In 530, the young general Belisarius won a famous victory here against a Persian army twice his size. But Dara's most haunting secret lies outside its walls: a vast necropolis carved into the limestone, and the three-story Gallery Tomb, where the bones of hundreds were found beneath a carving of the dead rising again. Some researchers believe they were Roman soldiers who fell defending the city. Today, Dara lies near Mardin in southeastern Turkey.
