The Palace at the Edge of the World | Ishak Pasha Palace, Turkey

Ishak Pasha Palace near Doğubayazıt, eastern Turkey, stands on a cliff below Mount Ararat, on the old Silk Road to Persia. It took almost 100 years to build, and its famous golden doors vanished during the Russian occupation of 1917. Built between the late 1600s and 1784 by Çolak Abdi Pasha and completed by his grandson Ishak Pasha, this Ottoman palace blends Ottoman, Seljuk, Persian, Armenian and Georgian styles. Inside: a mosque, a harem, a courtroom, a dungeon, an early heating system, and, according to local tradition, 366 rooms. Below it lie the ruins of old Bayazid, and on the cliffs above, an Urartian fortress almost 3,000 years old. Where did the golden doors go?
