When faced with rising homelessness, poverty, and systemic brokenness in our cities, our natural instinct is to lock our doors and look away. It is far easier to scroll past the pain or long for a sanitized, Disneyland-style escape than to confront the overwhelming, exhausting struggles of our neighbors. In Jesus’ day, people thought the only ways to handle a broken society were to completely retreat from it or overthrow it with a sword. Yet, Jesus chose a different path by physically stepping into the mess of humanity, possessing a gut-wrenching compassion for the helpless. Much like the 850 civilian boats that sailed into a warzone at Dunkirk to rescue stranded soldiers, or Father Damien voluntarily moving into a lawless leper colony to care for the infected, Christ calls His followers to move directly toward the suffering. Jesus did not remain in a distant heaven to shout religious platitudes, but instead came down to bleed for His enemies and suffer alongside us. When we pray for God’s kingdom to come on earth, we are not just asking for a miracle from afar; we are accepting the invitation to step into the dirt and be the answer to that prayer.
