In Fallen Idol — widely regarded as one of Arthur Lowe's finest performances — Captain Mainwaring is led astray by the insufferable Captain Square at the officers' mess, ending up thoroughly inebriated in front of his men, with only a genuinely heroic act able to restore his reputation — involving a live grenade, a butcher's van, a power station and, calamitously, a dog. And in A. Wilson (Manager)?, Mainwaring is infuriated to discover that Wilson is heading for promotion both at the bank and in the Home Guard simultaneously — a quietly devastating episode in which, for one brief, magnificent moment, Wilson gets to see how his name might look on a manager's door.
