The Warmington-on-Sea Home Guard has faced German spies, captured U-boat crews, and the constant, grinding threat of Mainwaring's organisational decisions. Now, apparently, it has artillery. This was probably someone's idea of progress. Big Guns arrives with a premise that is perfectly, almost mathematically calibrated for maximum Dad's Army chaos. Put heavy weaponry in the hands of a platoon whose relationship with smaller, less explosive equipment has always been — let's say — complicated, and the results write themselves. Except that Dad's Army never simply writes the obvious result. It finds the human comedy underneath the situation first — the pride, the anxiety, the desperate desire to appear competent in front of precisely the wrong people — and lets the chaos grow naturally from there. Mainwaring, naturally, greets the upgrade with the kind of barely contained excitement he reserves for anything that might, temporarily, close the gap between his self-image and his actual circumstances. Wilson greets it with an eyebrow raise so subtle it could qualify as a medical condition. Jones greets it with a volunteering speech that goes on considerably longer than the situation requires. And somewhere in the middle of all this, the guns — big, indifferent, and entirely unbothered by the chain of command — wait patiently to make their presence felt. Warmington-on-Sea has never been in more capable hands. Or less capable ones. Depending entirely on which way you look at it.
