Sincerely yours, Spectral Anomaly. ✨
The wind was a constant, whispering presence, threading through the desolate peaks like a voice from another time. The cold gnawed at the edges of my suit, despite its thermal insulation, as I took another slow step forward. The mist hung thick in the air, shifting and curling as though it were something alive, unwilling to reveal what lay ahead.
Then, through the veil of white, they emerged—three towering monoliths, their dark, metallic surfaces rising from the snow-choked earth like the last remnants of a forgotten empire. Each stood in solemn silence, their sheer verticality defying the jagged, uneven terrain that had crumbled around them. Lights, soft and golden, blinked from their facades, tracing incomprehensible patterns along their surfaces, as if they were still—after all this time—listening.
I had read about them in the archives, buried in the classified reports of lost expeditions. The Bastions of Ulnath. That was what they had been called by the first surveyors who had stumbled upon them, though the name meant nothing. No record of their construction existed. No hint of an origin. They had been here before us. Before our species had even reached this quadrant of space. Perhaps before our kind had even learned to walk upright.
The structures bore no doors, no visible means of entry. Just cold, unbroken metal and the ceaseless hum of the wind that moaned through the gaps in the cliffs. My scanner read no energy signatures beyond the flickering lights, no active systems, and yet the air was charged with something unseen. A presence.
The storm thickened as I drew closer. Snow swirled in violent eddies, momentarily obscuring the structures, and for a breathless second, I thought they had vanished. But they were still there, unmoving, eternal. I reached out, hesitated, then pressed a gloved hand against the nearest monolith’s surface. It was warm.
A sound, or perhaps the memory of a sound, vibrated in the back of my skull—a low, resonant frequency, deep and ancient, as if the structures themselves had stirred from slumber. The lights flickered, a pulse of intelligence, a signal.
I was not alone.
Something had awakened.
And it had been waiting.
