May 1955. Chicago. 2120 South Michigan Avenue. A 28-year-old hairdresser and auto-plant worker from St. Louis, wearing his father's only good suit, finally plays his song for Leonard Chess of Chess Records. Four minutes in, Chess raises his hand and says two words: "That's enough."
Chuck thought his dream was over. He drove 300 miles through the night, stood on the Chain of Rocks Bridge over the Mississippi, and decided to quit music forever. He never heard the end of that sentence — until someone knocked on his father's door at four o'clock in the morning.
A story about fathers who never got their chance, mothers who see more than we do, and the sentences we're too frightened to stay and hear.
This video is a dramatized retelling inspired by the lives and careers of Chuck Berry, Henry Berry, Martha Berry, Themetta Berry, Leonard Chess, Muddy Waters, Johnnie Johnson, Willie Dixon and Ebby Hardy. Dialogue and certain events have been recreated for storytelling purposes.
