Denver, Colorado, in the summer of 1955, filmed in bright home-movie color. A man in a sailor suit wearing an "I Bet On Nick" sign is pushed through downtown in a wheelbarrow by his friend in an "I Goofed" sign: a lost bet, paid in public. Along the way: Walgreens, Coca-Cola signs, city buses, a Publix cab, the Tabor Theatre sign, a brand-new Ford Fairlane, Ted's Diner, and the gold dome of the Colorado State Capitol at the end of the street. The license plates read 1955.
Then a second home movie from that same July: a family road trip through Colorado. The Garden of the Gods and Balanced Rock, the cog railway on Pikes Peak, the Royal Gorge Bridge, Loveland Pass on the Continental Divide, mountain streams and old mining country, and back in Denver at the Civic Center and the City and County Building.
Did your family live in Denver in the 1950s? Do you know who Nick was, or recognize any of these places from your own photos? Tell us in the comments.
