Olara Otunnu’s Incredible Journey: From Global Diplomat to Political Rival, and Now Uganda’s UN Secretary-General Hopeful** For decades, Olara Otunnu has been one of Uganda’s most respected and influential figures on the global stage. A Harvard- and Oxford-educated lawyer, former Ugandan Foreign Minister, Uganda’s Ambassador to the United Nations, former President of the UN Security Council, and former UN Under-Secretary-General, Otunnu built a reputation as one of Africa’s most accomplished diplomats. But behind his remarkable career lies a fascinating political story involving ambition, rivalry, power, and a decades-long struggle that reached from Kampala to the corridors of the United Nations in New York. In the early 1990s, Olara Otunnu emerged as a serious contender for the position of United Nations Secretary-General. With Africa expected to produce the next UN leader, many believed his experience, international connections, and diplomatic record made him a strong candidate. However, his journey to the world’s top diplomatic office faced a major obstacle — the lack of support from his own government under President Yoweri Museveni. The rivalry between the two Ugandan leaders became one of the most intriguing political stories of the era, raising questions about how domestic politics can influence global opportunities. Despite missing out on the UN Secretary-General position in 1991 and again in 1996, Otunnu’s international career continued to rise. In 1997, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed him as Under-Secretary-General and Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, where he played a major role in protecting children affected by war and conflict around the world. Years later, Otunnu returned to Uganda and entered opposition politics, becoming leader of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) and challenging President Museveni in the 2011 presidential elections. But history has taken an unexpected turn. After years of political rivalry, Uganda has now endorsed Olara Otunnu for the same position he once pursued decades ago — Secretary-General of the United Nations. What changed? Was there a political understanding between Olara Otunnu and President Museveni? Has time transformed old rivals into strategic allies? And could Uganda finally produce a Secretary-General of the United Nations? This video explores the rise, fall, and possible comeback of one of Africa’s most fascinating diplomats — Olara Otunnu.
