Why do we cry? In a preregistered study published in 2026, 106 people in Austria and Germany logged 315 real cries as they happened, and on its own, crying didn't reliably make them feel better; it depended on why they cried. Follow one tear from the gland to whoever sees it, and see who a tear is for.
In this video: how often adults cry (about every five days) and what sets it off (screens came first, at 32%), the 1981 tear-protein finding and why the 'tears flush out toxins' idea was never confirmed (young rhesus monkeys), a small lab study in Croatia where criers felt worse first and better 90 minutes later, how the mood trails of real cries depended on why people cried, what a tear does to a face in a twentieth of a second (studies from the US, the Netherlands and Japan), what went with relief for 4,249 young adults in 30 countries, a 41-country study of 7,007 people on tears and wanting to help, one small sniff-test study from Israel (and the tear-sniffing results that didn't repeat), and why people in richer, freer countries report crying more (37 countries). Plus the one-person rule for next time tears come.
