What does your gossip say about you? In experiments going back to 1998, people who read one person describing another tended to link that trait to the describer, even when told the pairing was random. Follow one whisper ('Sam is so lazy') down a line of five people, and see when a label sticks to the person who said it.
In this video: what 467 people's recorders caught (mostly neutral gossip; about one in seven clips negative), who gossips more, social talk in Britain, Iran, Poland and a Ju/'hoan community in Botswana, why social stories survive a chain, the Berkeley lab games where 26 of 27 notes were warnings, and how a little of a label can land on the teller: about a third of a point on a seven-point scale in one experiment, strongest (in a 2025 retest) when the teller seemed to be the person's friend. 'Lazy' is our example; the lab traits were words like cruel and friendly. Plus the warning test.

If gossip about you has turned into bullying or harassment, that's not a normal part of social life: tell someone you trust, or a professional. This video is psychology, not medical or legal advice.
