In this short dramatic poem from Bal-e-Jibril, Gabriel asks his old companion Iblis how the world of colour and scent is, and whether the rent in his robe might yet be mended. Iblis replies that heaven's silence is no longer for him: through his daring, the handful of dust (man) gained the urge to grow, and while Gabriel watches the battle of good and evil from the shore, it is Iblis who takes the blows of the storm. Iqbal is not praising Iblis. He is pointing to the struggle without which human selfhood cannot grow: where there is no trial, there is no striving. "La taqnatu" echoes the Qur'anic verse "Do not despair of the mercy of God" (Surah az-Zumar 39:53). Every line is shown with an English translation. 00:00 تعارف — Introduction 00:13 جبریل کا سوال — Gabriel's question 00:32 ابلیس: تُو واقف نہیں اس راز سے — "You do not know this secret" 00:58 تقنطوا یا لاتقنطوا — Despair, or despair not? 01:10 جبریل: مقاماتِ بلند — Gabriel: the lost exalted stations 01:20 مشتِ خاک میں ذوقِ نمو — The urge to grow in a handful of dust 01:33 ساحل اور طوفان — The shore and the storm 02:00 قصّۂ آدم کا لہو — Whose blood coloured the story of Adam? Audio courtesy: Iqbal Academy Pakistan English translation: Mustansir Mir International Iqbal Society iqbal.com.pk @AllamaMIqbal
