The Fiat 131 Abarth is one of the great icons of World Rally Championship history. In this video, we take a close look around four superb examples of the legendary Fiat Abarth 131 and celebrate the Group 4 rally car that transformed an ordinary family saloon into a three-time World Rally Championship-winning machine. Few classic rally cars have the presence, history and unmistakable shape of the Fiat 131 Abarth Rally. With its huge wheel arches, boxy silhouette, aggressive front end and famous period liveries, the 131 became one of the defining rally cars of the late 1970s and early 1980s. 🏁 THE FIAT 131 ABARTH STORY The original Fiat 131 was designed as a practical family car, but Fiat, Abarth and Bertone turned it into something completely different for international rallying. Developed for Group 4 competition, the Fiat 131 Abarth Rally combined rear-wheel drive with a lightweight body, independent suspension and a two-litre, twin-cam, 16-valve four-cylinder engine. Competition versions used Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection and produced around 225 horsepower, with later cars developing approximately 245 horsepower. With a competition weight of roughly 950 to just over 1,000 kilograms, the result was a fast, agile rally car capable on tarmac, gravel and snow. 🏆 WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP SUCCESS The results are what made the Fiat 131 Abarth a true rally legend. Fiat won the World Rally Championship manufacturers’ title with the 131 Abarth three times: • 1977 World Rally Championship Manufacturers’ Champion • 1978 World Rally Championship Manufacturers’ Champion • 1980 World Rally Championship Manufacturers’ Champion Across its World Rally Championship career, the Fiat 131 Abarth achieved 18 outright victories. Markku Alén won the 1978 FIA Drivers’ Cup in a 131 Abarth, while Walter Röhrl won the World Rally Drivers’ Championship in 1980. The car was also driven by major names including Timo Salonen, Björn Waldegård, Michèle Mouton, Jean-Claude Andruet and Bernard Darniche. This was one of the dominant international rally machines of its generation. ⚙️ GROUP 4 ENGINEERING Underneath the instantly recognisable bodywork was a serious competition car. The Group 4 Fiat 131 Abarth used a 1,995 cc, double-overhead-cam, 16-valve engine mounted longitudinally at the front. Power was sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed gearbox and a limited-slip differential. Lightweight materials were used extensively, including aluminium and synthetic resin body panels. Combined with the widened track, competition suspension and massive wheel arches, the engineering transformed the basic 131 saloon into a purpose-built rally weapon. Because it remained rear-wheel drive, the 131 also delivered the sideways, throttle-controlled driving style that historic rally fans still love today. 🎨 ALITALIA, WARSTEINER AND PERIOD RALLY LIVERIES Part of the appeal of the Fiat 131 Abarth is the incredible variety of liveries associated with it. The Alitalia colours are perhaps the most famous, instantly recalling Fiat’s factory World Rally Championship campaign. The 131 also appeared in a wide range of works, national and privateer colour schemes, including the striking Warsteiner-backed cars associated with Walter Röhrl. Seeing several examples together shows how well the shape lends itself to classic motorsport liveries. Whether you prefer the cleaner road-going look, full Alitalia colours, Warsteiner graphics or a competition-inspired historic build, the silhouette is unmistakable. 🔥 WHY THE FIAT 131 ABARTH STILL MATTERS More than four decades later, the Fiat Abarth 131 remains one of the most loved classic rally cars of the Group 4 period. It represents an era when manufacturers could start with a recognisable production saloon and turn it into a genuine world-beating competition car. It had the results, the drivers, the engineering and the character. Three World Rally Championship manufacturers’ titles. Eighteen outright WRC victories. A legendary list of drivers. Rear-wheel drive. A two-litre, 16-valve Abarth engine. And one of the most recognisable shapes in rallying.
