No family, no visitors, no footsteps at her door, Just cats in every window, cats across the floor. We were only school kids, we'd laugh and wonder why, Sometimes we'd make fun of her as we went walking by. We never understood the life she had to live, Or how much love those little cats could give. Only her and the cats, Underneath the sky. We thought she was lonely, We never asked her why. Years have passed since then, And now I finally see— That old lady's story Has come back home to me. Now I sit outside my house when the evening starts to fall, With cats around my feet and shadows on the wall. They curl up beside me, just happy to be near, And somehow in their silence, I feel that old lady here. I think about those school days, And things I didn't know. I wonder if she felt the same Watching her cats grow. Only her and the cats, That's what I remember now. A lonely little house, And an old and gentle soul. Life has turned the circle, And brought me where she sat— Older now, and understanding, Surrounded by my cats. Maybe she wasn't lonely. Maybe neither am I.
