During World War II, Kyiv became one of the most important battle sites in Ukraine. When Nazi Germany launched Operation Barbarossa against the Soviet Union in June 1941, Ukraine was a major target because of its farmland, industry, rail lines, and access to the Dnieper River. Kyiv, the capital of Soviet Ukraine, was fiercely defended by the Red Army, but German forces eventually surrounded the city. After weeks of fighting, German troops entered Kyiv on September 19, 1941, marking a major defeat for Soviet forces in the early stage of the war. The fall of Kyiv was followed by a brutal Nazi occupation. The city suffered from destruction, shortages, forced labor, and mass violence against civilians. One of the most horrific events took place at Babyn Yar, a ravine near Kyiv, where German SS and police units, with auxiliaries, murdered tens of thousands of Jews in late September 1941. Over the next two years, Babyn Yar also became a killing site for Roma people, Soviet prisoners of war, psychiatric patients, and other civilians. This made Kyiv not only a battlefield, but also one of the major sites of Holocaust violence in Eastern Europe. In 1943, after the German defeat at Stalingrad and the Soviet push westward, the Red Army began retaking territory across Ukraine. Soviet forces crossed the Dnieper River and launched an offensive to recapture Kyiv from German occupation. On November 6, 1943, Kyiv was retaken by the Soviets, but the city had been heavily damaged and its population deeply traumatized by two years of war and occupation.
