Son Bridge playtest - on my upcoming Eindhoven terrain in Arma 3 Son Bridge was one of the key objectives assigned to the 101st Airborne Division during Operation Market Garden in September 1944. The bridge crossed the Wilhelmina Canal at the village of Son, north of Eindhoven, and sat directly on the planned route of the British XXX Corps advance. For the Allied plan to work, the airborne troops had to capture bridges quickly and hold them open so tanks, trucks, and reinforcements could race north toward Nijmegen and Arnhem. The 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne, landed near Son and moved toward the bridge with the goal of taking it intact. The fight at Son Bridge became a race against time. German defenders delayed the American paratroopers with machine guns, anti-aircraft guns, and other prepared positions around the canal and bridge approach. The 506th pushed through Son and advanced toward the bridge, but the delay gave the Germans enough time to detonate their explosives. As the Americans got close, the bridge was blown, dropping the span into the canal and turning what should have been a captured crossing into a major obstacle. The moment was a serious setback because the entire Market Garden route depended on keeping the road open for XXX Corps. After the bridge was destroyed, the area around Son became an important bottleneck. The 101st had to secure the approaches while engineers worked to create a replacement crossing. British engineers later built a Bailey bridge, allowing vehicles and armor to continue south-to-north along the route toward Eindhoven, Veghel, Grave, Nijmegen, and Arnhem.
