Australia Released THIS to Kill Everyone on the Island... But the Result Took a New Turn

I’m Dr. Helen Carstairs, and I’m taking you inside the Macquarie Island eradication file: 130,000 rabbits, a virus released to kill them, and an ecosystem that changed in ways Australia never planned. I’ll trace what happened from the island’s pre-1810 condition to the collapse of the rabbit population, the impact on feral cats, and the moment a successful extermination began pushing the island toward the sea. I’ll examine: Why Australia tried to reset this World Heritage island What the virus did to the rabbits How removing one species affected cats and the wider ecosystem Why the result took a turn nobody in Hobart had planned for #MacquarieIsland #Australia #EnvironmentalHistory #InvasiveSpecies #Ecology #WildlifeDisasters
