CORPUS CHRISTI '87 ✦ 80s Cumbia Tejana the Night the Singer Lost Her Voice [2 Hour Mix]

It's 2 a.m. in Corpus Christi, 1987, and the dance hall on the bayfront is down to one tejano cumbia and whoever's still on the floor. Past the seawall the shrimp boats knock against the pilings. The Harbor Bridge is lit up over the ship channel, and somewhere across town a Whataburger hasn't closed since '82. The band came down from San Antonio on the afternoon bus, two hours of highway with a bajo sexto in the overhead rack. The tapes in their van say Freddie and Hacienda, both labels from right here in town. Now the singer holds her mic out to you. It's got a seashell where the grille should be. She snaps her fingers to count you in, and nobody's going to sing this one, so it's yours if you want it. The keytar player lights another cigarette and watches the water. The bajo sexto player keeps his eyes shut. Twelve doubled strings on the melody, the keytar playing the parts the horns used to play, congas and a soft cowbell underneath, a drum machine keeping it slow. Two hours of tejano cumbia, 80s keyboard cumbia, Gulf Coast synth grooves and Coastal Bend cassette sounds, recorded to tape and never released. Leave it on for work, or for the drive back up to San Antonio. Or take the mic. Imported after dark. ✦ Sounds like: a bajo sexto carrying the tune, keytar where the horn section used to stand, congas and a scraper under a gated snare, bass you feel through the floorboards, salt air in the tape hiss ✦ Good for: Focus, Late Night Coding, Deep Work, Driving ✦ Another city, same hour: KINGSTON '85, dub trombone cut to tape →    • KINGSTON '85 ✦ 80s Roots Reggae Dub & a Tr...   ✦ Or VERACRUZ '85, sax cumbia under the portales →    • VERACRUZ '85 ✦ 80s Cumbia del Sureste, the...   ✦ Or ACAPULCO '84, cumbia costeña on a tremolo guitar →    • ACAPULCO '84 ✦ 80s Cumbia Costeña on Elect...   ✦ Or SAN ANTONIO '87, cumbia tejana on the West Side →    • SAN ANTONIO '87 ✦ 80s Cumbia Tejana with a...   ✦ All cities →    • All Cities: 80s Night Drive Mixes | Neon I...   📌 Tracklist / Timestamps: 00:00 Bajo Sexto on Guadalupe Street - 80s Tejano Cumbia 03:01 Teclado Nuevo en el Garage - Keytar Cumbia 06:03 Raspas on Zarzamora - Gulf Coast Cumbia 09:26 Porch Light en Prospect Hill - Porch Light Tejano 12:18 Carro Largo por Culebra Road - Lowrider Cumbia 15:02 Parking Lot de Las Palmas - Palm Tree Synth Groove 17:52 El Farito de Woodlawn Lake - Little Lighthouse Cumbia 21:06 Over the Alazan Creek Bridge - Bridge Lights Tejano 24:25 Puestos Cerrados en Market Square - Closed Market Grooves 27:30 Milam Park sin Nadie - Empty Park Cumbia 31:17 River Walk Below the Street - Coastal Bend Tejano 34:30 Marquesina Apagada en Houston Street - Dark Theater Grooves 37:30 Last Bus to Corpus Christi - Corpus Christi Night Bus 41:06 Sombras en La Villita - Slow Burn Cumbia 44:21 El Tren que Parte el West Side - Rail Yard Grooves 47:59 Jets sobre Kelly Field - Jet Noise Synth Cumbia 50:51 Transformador en Castroville Road - Power Line Grooves 53:33 Concreto Fresco on the Interstate - Interstate Night Drive 56:57 Granizo on Military Drive - Gulf Storm Cumbia 1:00:12 Apache Creek Subiendo - High Water Tejano 1:03:28 Wipers en el Loop - Windshield Wiper Grooves 1:06:47 Apagon en el South Side - Lights Out Tejano 1:09:39 Mission Concepcion sin Luz - Stone Chapel Grooves 1:13:01 Agua Negra bajo el Acueducto - Bayfront Night Cumbia 1:16:02 Pantalla Oscura en el Drive In - Drive-In Movie Grooves 1:19:32 Helicoptero sobre Roosevelt Avenue - Searchlight Cumbia 1:22:42 La Ventana de la Mision San Jose - Rose Window Tejano 1:25:18 Ice House Abierto en South Flores - Jukebox Cumbia 1:28:16 Torre de las Americas Encendida - Tower Light Synth Groove 1:32:01 Tres de la Manana on St Marys - 3 AM Tejano 1:35:23 Pan Dulce de Madrugada - Pan Dulce Grooves 1:38:24 Alamo Plaza sin Turistas - Alamo Plaza Cumbia 1:41:37 Menudo en Nogalitos - All-Night Menudo Grooves 1:44:32 Tortilleria Trabajando de Noche - Night Kitchen Cumbia 1:47:49 Semaforos en Verde por Broadway - Gulf Highway Night Drive 1:51:02 Primera Luz en Elmendorf Lake - Daybreak Tejano 1:54:03 Barbacoa de Domingo - Sunday Barbacoa Cumbia 1:57:19 Day Shift a Kelly Field - Corpus Christi Dawn Outro ✦ INSPIRED BY: Laura Canales • Selena y Los Dinos • Gary Hobbs • Elsa García © Neon Import.
