SAN ANTONIO '87 ✦ 80s Cumbia Tejana with a Synth Where the Horns Used to Be [2 Hour Mix]

It's 2:15 a.m. in San Antonio, 1987, and one dance hall on Guadalupe Street still has its patio lights on and a cumbia tejana going. The raspa stand on Zarzamora pulled its shutter an hour ago. A long Buick rolls down Culebra Road with the windows down, slow enough that you hear the bass before you see the car. The bajo sexto player won't put it down. He tips his hat and holds the twelve strings out to you, like it's your turn now. The girl on keys bought that synth on layaway, and she plays the parts the horn section used to play, back when the band could afford a horn section. Her friend lights another cigarette and never looks at the stage. Twelve doubled strings on the melody, congas and a soft cowbell under them, a drum machine with a gated snare keeping it slow. Two hours of cumbia tejana, 80s keyboard cumbia, synth Tex-Mex and West Side cassette grooves, recorded to tape and never released. Leave it on for work, or for a lap around Loop 410. Or stay for one more song. Imported after dark. ✦ Sounds like: twelve doubled strings over a drum machine, synth brass where the horns used to be, congas with a soft cowbell, gated snare, a cassette left on the dashboard all August ✦ Good for: Focus, Late Night Coding, Deep Work, Driving ✦ Another city, same hour: VERACRUZ '85, sax cumbia under the portales →    • VERACRUZ '85 ✦ 80s Cumbia del Sureste, the...   ✦ Or ACAPULCO '84, cumbia costeña on a tremolo guitar →    • ACAPULCO '84 ✦ 80s Cumbia Costeña on Elect...   ✦ Or CORPUS CHRISTI '87, tejano cumbia by the Gulf →    • CORPUS CHRISTI '87 ✦ 80s Cumbia Tejana the...   ✦ Or NUEVO LAREDO '86, cumbia off a bootleg tape →    • NUEVO LAREDO '86 ✦ 80s Accordion Cumbia & ...   ✦ All cities →    • All Cities: 80s Night Drive Mixes | Neon I...   📌 Tracklist / Timestamps: 00:00 Bajo Sexto on Guadalupe Street - Bajo Sexto Cumbia 03:00 Teclado Nuevo en el Garage - Tejano Keyboard Groove 05:53 Raspas on Zarzamora - Cumbia Tejana 08:45 Porch Light en Prospect Hill - Late Night Tejano 11:38 Carro Largo por Culebra Road - Slow Cruise Cumbia 14:52 Parking Lot de Las Palmas - Tex-Mex Synth Groove 17:54 El Farito de Woodlawn Lake - Lakeside Night Cumbia 20:54 Over the Alazan Creek Bridge - Creek Bridge Grooves 24:03 Puestos Cerrados en Market Square - Market Square Cumbia 27:14 Milam Park sin Nadie - Empty Plaza Synth Cumbia 30:21 River Walk Below the Street - River Walk Night Grooves 33:11 Marquesina Apagada en Houston Street - Dark Marquee Cumbia 36:34 Last Bus to Corpus Christi - Gulf Coast Bus Grooves 39:47 Sombras en La Villita - Shadowy Cumbia Tejana 42:41 El Tren que Parte el West Side - Freight Train Cumbia 45:29 Jets sobre Kelly Field - Air Base Synth Groove 48:27 Transformador en Castroville Road - Electric Hum Cumbia 51:08 Concreto Fresco on the Interstate - Highway Cold Wave 54:37 Granizo on Military Drive - Hailstorm Cumbia 57:35 Apache Creek Subiendo - Flood Night Grooves 1:00:17 Wipers en el Loop - Rainy Night Drive Cumbia 1:03:25 Apagon en el South Side - Power Outage Cumbia 1:06:57 Mission Concepcion sin Luz - Old Mission Synth Cumbia 1:09:49 Agua Negra bajo el Acueducto - Dark Water Grooves 1:13:01 Pantalla Oscura en el Drive In - Drive-In Synth Cumbia 1:16:04 Helicoptero sobre Roosevelt Avenue - Tense Tejano Groove 1:19:12 La Ventana de la Mision San Jose - Mission Window Cumbia 1:22:14 Ice House Abierto en South Flores - Ice House Tejano 1:25:05 Torre de las Americas Encendida - Neon Tower Cumbia 1:28:28 Tres de la Manana on St Marys - St. Mary's Bar Grooves 1:31:38 Pan Dulce de Madrugada - Panaderia Night Cumbia 1:35:02 Alamo Plaza sin Turistas - Alamo Night Synth Groove 1:38:04 Menudo en Nogalitos - Late Night Diner Cumbia 1:41:03 Tortilleria Trabajando de Noche - Tortilleria Tape Grooves 1:44:02 Semaforos en Verde por Broadway - Green Light Night Drive 1:47:02 Primera Luz en Elmendorf Lake - First Light Bajo Sexto 1:50:05 Barbacoa de Domingo - Sunday Morning Cumbia 1:53:09 Day Shift a Kelly Field - Morning Shift Grooves 1:56:02 Urracas en los Cables - Sunrise Tejano Groove 1:59:18 Regando la Yarda - San Antonio Dawn Outro ✦ INSPIRED BY: Patsy Torres • Ram Herrera • Selena y Los Dinos • Mazz • La Mafia © Neon Import.
