A door that won't open until tomorrow. A father who sends his son into a market that already tried to swallow his other one. A mother calling in twenty years of friendship for a debt neither woman will name aloud. Two Roman families, one patrician and fading, one plebeian and rising, followed from the First Punic War to the legions of Caesar — where their bloodlines converge as the ancestors of Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo. In this chapter: With a day to spare before Precius can receive them, the Vetellius family splits to close the gap on the ransom every way they can — Publius back to Ostia to collect a debt and ask careful questions, Gaius and Domitia to call in an old friendship for more than coin, and Vetellia left holding the house together in their absence. A note on sources: The lustration rite and general texture of Roman patronage/business relationships are historically grounded; Precius, Faustus, Sempronia, and the specifics of the Vetellius family's circumstances are invented, consistent with the series' historical liberty policy. #RomanHistory #HistoricalFiction #AncientRome
