Why did Tony Soprano deliberately make Janice angry?
In The Sopranos episode “Cold Cuts,” Janice appears to be making real progress after anger management. She is calmer, more controlled, and beginning to break the destructive patterns that defined the Soprano family.
Tony notices — and instead of being happy for his sister, he deliberately pushes her until she finally explodes.
But why?
In this North Jersey Files analysis, we examine Tony and Janice’s infamous dinner scene, the “Soprano gene,” Tony’s years in therapy, Christopher’s sobriety, Carmela’s attempts to change, and the brutal reason Janice’s progress may have threatened Tony more than her anger ever did.
Because if Janice could change after growing up with Livia Soprano, Tony might have to confront a possibility he spent years avoiding: maybe being a Soprano wasn’t an excuse.
Maybe staying the same was a choice.
