For generations, a British bus meant two people: a driver at the front and a conductor moving through the bus, collecting fares, issuing tickets and looking after passengers. Then, over the course of a few decades, the conductor began to disappear.
The usual explanation seems straightforward. New double-decker buses arrived with their engines at the rear and entrances at the front, making it possible for drivers to take fares themselves. But the story is more complicated than that.
The Leyland Atlantean helped make one-person operation possible. Yet when some operators first introduced these buses, they still wanted conductors on board. So what really brought an end to one of Britain's most familiar jobs?
In this documentary, we investigate the changes that transformed Britain's bus services, from the arrival of the Atlantean in the 1950s to the spread of driver-only operation in the decades that followed.
Along the way, we uncover the practical problems of running crowded holiday services, the staffing shortages facing London Transport, the experiences of conductors who worked as husband-and-wife teams, and the struggle against racial discrimination on Bristol's buses. We also examine the role of government funding, changing regulations, falling passenger numbers and negotiations over workers' jobs.
Through contemporary reports, historical records and personal recollections, we follow a change that was about much more than the design of a bus. It was about the economics of public transport, the people who kept the services running, and the disappearance of a familiar part of everyday British life.
The rear-engined bus made a new way of working possible. But was it really responsible for taking the conductor away?
