This double fugue has a long first subject whose third bar is the diminution of the first four notes followed by (A-D-D-etc.) the third subject of the Fugue in C-sharp minor from WTC 1, which is featured in some of the episodes. The second subject immediately begins with a stretto of the descending chromatic scale, representing lamentation, whose countersubject plays such an important role throughout the remainder of the piece that, when everything is combined together in the final section, it gives one the illusion of a triple fugue.
The Henle edition has extra ties in the subject except for the soprano voice.
