광화문 120m 상공서 외줄 묘기 성공 "평생 못 본 광경"
High above Seoul's Gwanghwamun today, world champion slackliner Jaan Roose walked a thin line strung between two high-rise buildings at an event hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and Red Bull Korea
Our Baek Ju-hee has more.
With each step, the slackline tipped to one side and gasps echoed from the street below.
Estonian slackliner Jaan Roose was walking a flat strap just a few centimeters wide, a hundred and twenty meters above central Seoul.
The slackline stretched a hundred and sixty meters between the Koreana Hotel and the Donga Media Center, with only a safety leash and no net below.
After reaching the Donga Media Center in about fifteen minutes, he took bigger risks on the way back.
He performed a handstand, hung from the slackline by one hand, and dangled upside down by his feet.
About ten minutes later, he arrived back at the hotel, successfully completing the round trip.
But that wasn't all. In fact, Jaan Roose completed the trip twice, once at 1 PM and the other at 4 PM.
Known for his famous feat of crossing seas on a slackline, Roose has now brought the performance to a Korean city for the first time.
He says the inspiration came from jultagi, Korea's traditional tightrope walking, which he saw during a visit in 2022 and has followed it closely since then.
"I would like to come back to Korea more and more, and it's not the first time and I hope not the last time, and when it comes to city lines, urban slacklines like Lotte Tower is for example, a very interesting place, and also I would like to travel more around the country, go to the south of Korea more."
Roose is a three-time world slackline champion and one of the sport's top athletes.
In 2024, he became the first person to slackline from Asia to Europe across Istanbul's Bosphorus Strait, and the first to cross Italy's three-point-six-kilometer Strait of Messina on a slackline.
Today, he added the skies over Seoul to that list.
After the performance in Gwanghwamun, Roose said the tough course and weather made the city walk harder than in nature.
Korea's mountains, a contrast to the relatively flat Estonia, are lined up as his next challenge here.
