They Found a Dead Man on an Australian Beach — His Pocket Held a Torn Poem That Said "It Is Finished"
On December 1, 1948, a well-dressed man was found dead on a beach near Adelaide — no ID, no wallet, and every label cut from his clothes. Months later, a scrap of paper was found hidden in his trousers, torn from the final page of an ancient book of poetry. This is the true story of the Somerton Man — and the mystery Australia still cannot close.
On 1 December 1948, an unidentified man was found dead on Somerton Park beach in Adelaide, South Australia. His clothing labels had been removed, his pockets held only cigarettes, combs, and travel tickets, and a suitcase left at Adelaide railway station bore the name "T. Keane." Months later, a scrap printed with the Persian words "Tamam Shud" — meaning "it is finished" — was found sewn into his fob pocket, torn from a copy of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam whose back cover carried an undeciphered code. In July 2022, researchers Derek Abbott and Colleen Fitzpatrick announced DNA evidence identifying him as Carl "Charles" Webb — a finding South Australia Police have not officially confirmed. The cause of death remains officially unknown.
