On the first day of every month, I visit a shrine. In Japan it's called otsuitachi-mairi. I don't go to ask for things — I go to give thanks for another month lived safely, and to say out loud what I've decided to do. Not a wish. A declaration.
Then home for breakfast: scrambled egg and cheese on toast, kiwi, pear, coffee, and a dashi soup. Both wheat and dairy were once on my banned list. I'd studied gluten-free and casein-free and filed them under "bad" — without ever testing whether they actually suited my body. When I finally studied properly and watched how I responded, the real question appeared: how much, and which kind. And there are people making wheat and dairy honestly, with care. Once I knew that, I stopped sorting food into good and bad.
Later, I opened the miso I packed in January. Soybeans, salt and koji, eight months asleep in the dark. In Japan we call homemade miso "temae-miso" — a word that also means bragging about your own work. When I use this jar up, I'll go back to buying it. But making it myself is what taught me there's no such thing as good food and bad food. Nothing I eat is a given; somebody made every bit of it.
